DASERA SIG 2: Nature connectedness

Nature connectedness is a central and growing concept in science education, which DASERA has chosen to focus on through a dedicated Special Interest Group (SIG). The SIG on Nature Connectedness works to investigate and strengthen the connection between humans and nature – both as an educational and an existential matter.

In light of global challenges such as the climate crisis, biodiversity loss and increasing dissatisfaction among children and young people, it is becoming increasingly important to develop teaching methods that not only convey knowledge about nature, but also promote an emotional and identity attachment to it. The SIG sees the connection to nature as a possible key to engaging pupils and students in the natural sciences in a more holistic way.

The SIG deals with issues such as:

  • How can aesthetic learning processes support nature?
  • What role do identity and emotional involvement play in science education?
  • How can we as teachers and researchers create space for experiences that promote the feeling of being part of nature – that nature is part of us?

The SIG brings together researchers, educators and communicators from different institutions and sectors, and works both theoretically and practically to develop didactics that support the connection to nature.

Through open and inclusive processes, we strengthen the links between research, teaching and society, and create fertile ground for long-term collaboration and joint development. We do that, among other things. through seminars, reading groups and workshops that strengthen the field and create new connections.
